Theater in Montpellier comes to the Château de Flaugergues for an exceptional premiere about the birth of Impressionism. This unique performance allows the Montpellier public to discover a play currently running in Paris, in a remarkable heritage setting. It is fully in line with the cultural program of the Château de Flaugergues.

The estate is thus continuing its commitment to artistic creation and the performing arts.

A play about the birth of Impressionism

This theatrical production highlights three major figures in art history: Claude Monet, Auguste Renoir, and Frédéric Bazille. While Monet and Renoir are world-renowned, Bazille remains more obscure. However, he played an essential role in the emergence of Impressionism.

A native of Montpellier, Frédéric Bazille belonged to a local bourgeois family. Initially destined for a career in medicine, he chose instead to follow his passion for painting. He moved to Paris and joined a studio where he met Monet and Renoir.

Bazille, Monet, and Renoir: a founding friendship

Very quickly, a deep friendship developed between the three artists. Together, they shared their research, their doubts, and their ambitions. However, this relationship was also marked by emulation and sometimes rivalry. Yet it was precisely this dynamic that would have a lasting impact on the history of art.

Thus was born one of the most famous artistic movements: Impressionism.

The play “Monet, Renoir, and Bazille: The Birth of Impressionism” delicately retraces this seminal period. It combines theater, art history, and human emotions, while remaining accessible to all audiences.

A theater event in Montpellier in a heritage venue

Performed by six young actors, the play is staged every weekend in Paris. However, the troupe is taking advantage of a day off to come to Montpellier. They will give a special performance at the Château de Flaugergues, an iconic local heritage site.

Attending this performance is a unique theatrical experience in Montpellier, in a setting steeped in history. The venue enhances the proximity to the artists and gives the story a special resonance.
